One Hobby that can Suit Almost All Ages is Soap Making

Soap can be designs in many different ways due to its many properties. One aspect of soap that can easily be changed is color. Aside from this, the small and basic properties of soap can also be easily modified to suit your preferences. Making a design for the soap may be the hardest but with enough creativity and practice, this will also come naturally and soap making will be a lot easier.

With all of the different properties of soap that you can manipulate, you would think that it is a very hard process to do. On the contrary, it is a fairly easy process that even small children can learn and take this up as a hobby, as long as the correct protective equipment is worn with adult supervision.

The ingredients that you will need in making soap are oils and lye. Aside from these, you may also choose to add fragrant oils, herbal leaf extracts and dyes to add to the appeal of your soap. Some materials that you will need for soap making are mixing tools, bowls, molds, knives, goggles, face masks and gloves.

Once you have prepared all of your materials and ingredients, you will still need to research on soap recipes that you can use. This way, you will know the exact amounts of each ingredient that you will need. You should also decide on what method you will use to make your soap, whether it will be the hot or cold method.

After doing your research, you are now ready to start making your own soap. Once you have your protective gear on, you may start dissolving your lye in water. When the lye is fully dissolved, you can now add your oil so that the mixture can undergo saponification.

This needs to be continuously mixed until it becomes completely homogenous. You already start adding your other ingredients into the mixture such as dyes to give color to your soap. Once you are satisfied with your mixture, you can start pouring your mixture into molds so that they can harden and take shape.

This soap will still need to be aged after hardening, especially if you used the cold method in making the soap. This will ensure that your soap is hard all throughout and that its properties are fully incorporated into the soap. This will usually take around 4 weeks before it is ready to use.

After aging, your soap is now ready to use. You may put it in your bathroom and use it when you shower, or you can just put it beside your sink to enhance the design of your bathroom. You also have the option of giving these out as gifts if you can already make soaps with excellent designs.

How to Fix Stuffed Animals – Stitching in 3 Simple Steps

Have you or your son or daughter ever had a favorite toy that’s gotten a little worse for wear? With all the times your favorite plush toys get squeezed, dragged around, and played, with wear and tear takes an inevitable toll. Little rips can make your most beloved teddy bear look more like a Franken Bear, suitable only for Halloween. Luckily, this problem isn’t as hopeless as you might think. There are a few steps you can take to fix almost any soft plush toy so that they are practically as good as new!

Step 1

Identifying the specific problem area (or areas) is your first step. The most common rips happen at the toy’s stitches, which can include where the legs, arms, or head were sewn on to the body, which is what we are going to focus on. This is naturally the weakest point on a stuffed animals body, and when squeezed the stuffing puts pressure on these areas, causing the stitching to fail. These rips might not all be easy to fix, but they can mostly be approached in the same way.

Step 2

For the second step, you’ll need to pick up supplies. There are some basic tools you’ll need when the seams on a plush toy are unraveling: a needle and thread. The thread should match the stuffed animals fabric, or be as neutral or complementary in color as possible. Make sure the thread is tough too, otherwise you’ll just have to do this again a couple of months down the road. Most needles you can get as part of a set, and that way you’ll have needles in various sizes. This is important because a big teddy bear may require a thick, touch needle, while a small plush dog should have a small, delicate needle. Also, get a needle threader if you have trouble getting the thread through.

Step 3

For step three, learn what you need to do. Even an amateur sewer can stitch up a stuffed animal, it is not at all complicated. First, thread the needle with an arm’s length of thread so that you make sure that you won’t run out, as that complicates the sewing. Once the needle has been threaded, double the thread and tie a knot at the end. This way you’ll have two rows of thread with a knot at the bottom away from the needle. Now it’s time to start sewing. On one side of the split seam, push the needle through, and then push it across through the other side of the split seam. Pull so that the two sides come together, and then push the needle in again on the next part as you sew in a diagonal pattern. Keep doing this so that you stitch the ripped sides together. When you get to the end, have the needle go through the last stitch and wrap it around, so that the last stitch is strong. Then, tie a knot or two as close to the stitch as possible in order to make sure that no thread is showing. Finally, cut the thread.

So there you go, practically any stuffed animal can be fixed with a minimum of hassle. It only takes a couple of minutes of your time, and the purchase of a needle and thread is very inexpensive. Now you can think twice before throwing your favorite toys away!

Anyone Can Learn How to Paint

There was a time in some European countries when it was a must to learn how to paint. This wasn’t just a sign of an elevated social position but also an indication of good breeding and education. The truth is that there are many different reasons for deciding to pursue painting. For some individuals, this is simply one of the best ways to appear more sophisticated than they really are. Naturally, such an image can never fail to impress especially if you seek to amaze possible dates. There are however, even more people who want to learn painting because it is a socially acceptable and celebrated form of self expression. No one can take expression on canvas against you. Moreover, painting is also a great way to relax. This is especially good for people who live hectic or highly stressful professional lives.

There aren’t a lot of different ways to learn to paint. The oldest learning method is to take after a master. This is simply another way of saying you should look for someone to apprentice yourself to. In modern days, this means enrolling in art school and participating in painting sessions. Depending on where you decide to study, this would mean having to spend a lot of good money.

You might not be able to spare enough cash for school. If this is the case, you can just learn on your own. One learning method is to copy established works of art. If you find it hard to work entirely on your own, you can invest in a couple of informative DVDs or e-books. Depending on the instructional material that you pick, you can quickly get a grasp of basic concepts through illustrations, explanations and demonstrations.

You can’t go wrong if you decide to ask for help to learn. This is especially true if you know absolutely nothing about art and painting. A good teacher or a good instructional book will help you learn painting by giving you the chance to tackle basic concepts first. Some of these basic ideas or skills include appropriate brush handling, picking between water and oil colors, comprehending color links, adding light and shadow and painting without the use of brushes.

When deciding who or where to go to for help, you need to evaluate yourself first. Find out if you are a self starter or if you can’t manage without step by step instruction. Once you find out which kind of person you are, you can pick the most appropriate learning materials for best results.

Anyone can learn how to paint and do art projects. This is true even for people who imagine that they aren’t born to be painters. All you really need to do is to get a good instructor or instructional material.

The Top Two Area Rugs For Rainy Season, And The 1 You Should Avoid

Even though spring is coming to an end, you can still benefit from some pointers for the wet season. You will still get those early summer rains and summer thunderstorms, which means sloppy muddy soil. This will mean a couple of things for your home’s interior – wet shoes and feet, and wet muddy floors and carpets. These are a few tips for area rugs in your entryways that will aid in avoiding tracking the mess thru the rest of your house.

Brown Area Rugs: we’re not talking about solid brown area rugs here, rather ones that include numerous shades of brown in their design. Rugs that are in the same colour family as dust and mud have a tendency to hide the dirt better, since it’s not likely that you will be vacuuming them every time someone comes in your home. And an added bonus is if they get stained by muddy feet, the taints aren’t as conspicuous because they match the rug.

Green Area Rugs: Green rugs with a major quantity of other natural tones in the overall design are also superb for mud season, for plenty of the same reasons as shown. They’re also superb for hiding grass stains, which makes them ideal not only for mud season but for spring and summer as well , when wet grass clippings start to make an appearance in your home! Avoid a bright green rug.

Black Area Rugs: A solid black area rug is the one shade that you’ve got to avoid at all cost during mud season. While black looks great mixed with the colors above, when it is solid it shows each small mud particle and stain. Which is not a nice thing when mud is being tracked into your home! So keep the black area rugs to other areas of your house where muddy feet don’t generally go, like bedrooms.  Find one at 360.

By following these simple tiny tips, you will be able to find an area rug that’s just the right color for your house this mud season!

The Joy of Making Hand Dipped Candles

Hand Dipped Candles

“Who Else Wants To Discover The Joy of Making Hand Dipped Candles?”

Hand Dipped Candles

Making hand dipped candles is a great hobby or business endeavor. Once you get the hang of it, the process is quite simple. For those who have the basics down cold, consider experimenting with the art of making hand dipped candles. While these lovely creations take more time, they are stunning. You can use several colors on each candle giving it a unique color scheme.

Making Hand Dipped Candles

There are basic tools you will need to make hand dipped candles. Most of them you already use if you have experience in making candles. You will need a large amount of paraffin wax, wick, and a double boiler to melt it in.

Other utensils include wooden spoons, bowls, and a good quality thermometer. The colors available for hand dipped candles are too many to name. These colors come in various forms including cakes, chips, powder, or liquid. If you choose to add scents to your hand dipped candles you need to make sure it is pure oil that does not have a water or alcohol base to it.

Hand Dipped Candles Design

You will prepare your wax for hand dipped candles that same as you do for regular candles. Let it continue to heat until it reaches a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it does, turn the heat down very low to keep the wax in liquid form.

Add the color to the wax, using a small amount at a time until your reach the color you want. Add a small amount of scent the mix at this time if you desire. Use scents moderately as you don’t want to have too powerful of a smell. Using too much fragrance can also result in the candle not burning properly.

Next, cut the wick for your candles, keeping it just a bit longer than the candle length you want. If you are making sets of the candles, it is important to cut the wicks exactly the same length. You will want to dip the wicks into the candle wax making sure to coat it properly.

This is how you will “build” your candle. After the wicks cool, dip them again. Each time you do, the candle will grow in size. If you want different areas of the candles to be different colors, you will be able to do so by simply having more than one color of wax ready to use. Once your candle is close to the desired thickness you want, shave it with a soft blade, giving the top a pointed look.

Dip your candles a few more times to give them a smooth finish.

Creating hand dipped candles is a great hobby or business venture. The process is time consuming, but the creations are beautiful. Learning to make hand dipped candles can be tricky. This is not a good type of candle for beginners to try to learn with. They will quickly become frustrated. To practice without wasting supplies, melt down the wax from the candles you are building and use it over and over again until you have the process perfected.

To make particular designs on hand dipped candles, consider purchasing a book. Most will offer you great color photos with step by step directions for making each hand dipped candle. You will also be able to obtain great color charts for obtaining the best color for your candles. The internet is also a great place to get ideas for the colors of your hand dipped candles.

Candle Making Techniques 7 – Before lighting a candle, be sure the candle is in a proper holder for burning. Also, never set the candle on a wood or plastic surface. Candleholders can become extremely hot after burning a while. Place burning candles on a metal surface if possible.

For a safer way to enjoy scented or unscented candles, use a candle warmer. Candle warmers melt the candle while giving off its maximum scent. Warmers also enable you to use the candle longer without burning it up. Just make sure the warmer is placed on a non-flammable surface such as metal.

Keep an eye on candles and never leave them unattended for long periods of time. Also, never place a burning candle too close to flammable objects such as silk flowers, cloth or clothes, or a hanging coat.

Blend colorful, sweet smelling candles throughout your decor to add beauty to every room of your home. You can find a variety of scented candles, unscented candles, votives, tealights, globe candles, taper candles, and pillar candles online to suit your needs.

Wax melting is a relatively easy process but still you will have to be very careful while doing it. Don’t let your children get close to it or touch it. Fragrances and dyes can be found in craft stores. Remember to add the dye in the melted wax very slowly so that it gets completely dissolved. Always add colors one at a time so that you get to see which one is working best with the other.

You must watch the wax very carefully while it melts because in case of extra heat, it can burn. In case it starts to smoke, remove it from the burner quickly but don’t let it spill on you. Even if it happens, don’t wipe but run it under cold water so that it hardens and falls.
