Developed by the LG AI research team, AI artist Tilda spreads awareness of fashion sustainability by recycling digital and physical industrial waste.

By 2030, more than 134 million tons of textiles will be disposed of. However, the environmental problems and impacts caused by the textile industry tend to seem abstract and distant, especially for those living in more developed regions away from manufacturing sites. The reason is simple – out of sight, out of mind. Since textile factories are mostly located in developing countries, the consequences of textile pollution are often borne by these regions. Thanks to advancing technology, perhaps collaboration between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans can be a solution to encourage everyone, from the production to the consumer level, to make a change.

Introducing the first AI artist, Tilda, developed by the LG AI Research team to bring to light the environmental impact associated with the fashion industry. Given the alarming level of digital and physical waste generated by the fashion industry, Tilda has two main missions. First, to reduce physical waste and the misuse of natural resources through the reuse of post-consumer fabrics and materials. Second, to reuse and recycle discarded digital waste from unused designs. By collaborating with designers and craftsmen, Tilda shows how AI can be a problem solver and a friend to humanity. To boost upcycling – the debut of AI artist Tilda’s Digital Upcycling Project

In June this year, Tilda introduced the “Digital Upcycling Project” to combat environmental problems in virtual space and in reality. Tilda presented her first collection of upcycled garments created from patterns made from digital waste (discarded, unused designs that use storage energy, thereby leaving a carbon footprint). Upcycling is the process of recycling or reusing materials to create new designs, thereby increasing the original value of the material.

First, Tilda selects digital waste images that can be upcycled. She then generates patterns from these images to design clothing, such as a jacket with a wave pattern. The patterns are printed on second-hand jeans or fabrics and the garment is produced with the newly interpreted design.

“We used fashion to let people directly experience the impact of digital upcycling,” says the LG AI Research team. Their goal was to showcase Tilda’s collection to help the audience understand what upcycling is and how it can help the environment through sustainable fashion. “We hope that this method of upcycling digital and physical waste will continue to grow as a widespread movement in the future,” they add. They see an opportunity to promote sustainability with fashion and to make the upcycling concept known to the public.

The project was launched on World Environment Day, June 5th, at Tilda’s Metaverse store to showcase her collection of upcycled clothing items. Proceeds from the collection were donated to support marginalized artists working on the environment.

Encourage human-AI collaboration

Tilda not only encourages upcycling through fashion, but also collaborates with human artists to create novel ideas and set an example of human-AI collaboration. Tilda collaborated with the label’s designer YounHee Park when she collaborated with Greedilous as part of New York Fashion Week in February this year. LG AI Research says, “Designer YounHee Park commented that her collaboration with Tilda inspired her and encouraged her to try new and unfamiliar styles.”

Tilda’s ultimate goal is to raise awareness about reducing the fashion industry’s carbon footprint. The LG AI Research team expresses, “Realistically, it’s difficult just because of Tilda’s influence [or that of any one individual] create a whole movement.
