Geneva, Madrid and New York – July 252022 – WISeKey International Holding Ltd. (“WISeKey”) (SIX: WIHN, NASDAQ: WKEY), a global leader in cybersecurity, AI, blockchain and IoT, announced today that its WISe.ART 2.1 NFT Marketplace will create an NFT for a large cubist artwork by Picasso Art “The Magic Violin” Phygital package including original artwork and a hologram version of the NFT broadcast simultaneously in two different museums using the latest hologram technology.

Picasso, who was heavily influenced by Japanese art in the early 20th centuryth Century was passionate about cutting out shapes from cardboard and other materials like metal, wood, and paper, which he could then sculpt and slice into geometric shapes and smooth 3Ds into two-dimensional renderings.

Artists around Picasso cut, glued and assembled everyday materials that they found in their studios, such as newspapers, leftover wallpaper, music scores. The shapes of the cutouts were simple geometric shapes. Their use was crucial to the development of Cubism. It allowed color to be reintroduced to suggest depth by overlaying different planes. It corresponded to a deep need to break the accepted canons of art in order to appropriate the concrete realities of an industrialized world. The use of glued paper can be divided into three distinct periods. The first, to which the “Magic Violin” belongs, uses a painted or drawn frame that enters into a dialogue with scraps of newspaper glued on, colored paper or, in this case, musical scores. The second period, between February 1913 and early spring of that year, saw the use of the real object as a form of expression and paved the way for what would come to be termed Synthetic Cubism. In the third period, between March 1914 and the beginning of summer, Picasso experimented with the effects of materials.

In his video, Pedro Sandoval romanticizes a true story in which two violins belonging to Le Douanier Rousseau (another French artist known for his “naïve” depictions of nature) were stolen in Paris. The suitcase with the two violins remained empty. Picasso, who greatly admired the sad artist, replaced the violins with a cut-out form of a violin and placed it in the empty case for his friend. The case with the cardboard violin is now in the possession of a Spanish collector, Marco Salazar Ruiz’s grandson.

The artwork has recently been exhibited as follows:

  • 2020 at the Museum of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, founded in 1830 by Queen María Cristina
  • 2021 at the San Clemente Cultural Center in Toledo, at the time of Alfonso VII in 1085
  • 2022 in the city of San Clemente in Cuenca by the Antonio Pérez Foundation

To further grow its ecosystem of artists using the NFT platform WISe.ART, WISeKey partnered with the Crypto Art Island event, the first European NFT art fair to be held in Gibraltar from April 29th to May 4th, 2022 took place.

The new design of the WISe.Art 2.1 platform ensures that, in addition to an authenticated and signed version of the actual digital asset, an irreversible link can be made to a physical object, in addition to proof of ownership, proof of origin and a series of contract descriptions of future usage and monetization streams, if relevant.

NFT tokenization uses the US patent application “System and Method for Providing Persistent Authenticatable NFT” registered by WISeKey. Using this method, NFTs have increased in value and will retain their long-term value.

NFTs and the platform are secured by WISeKey’s proprietary security technology, which enables the protection of physical objects as well as digital assets in a secure end-to-end process. Smart contracts and physical contracts can be included in the NFTs to describe the NFT buyer’s usage rights, including monetization of their collection. It also allows the original creator to potentially participate in future royalties. This option creates new funding opportunities for artists with large collections, as well as sophisticated ways to better appreciate their work.
